Full Description:
GIAC Prep's introductory certification track is designed to empower corporate and government infosec administrators to effectively secure their organization's information and information resources. Computers and appliances are being added to the Internet at the phenomenal rate of more than 2 million per month. For many of these appliances, security is an afterthought (if thought about at all). Knowing that the only secure system is one that is disconnected from the net and powered down, we must find a better way to strike a balance between security and getting the job done.

This introductory track contains a variety of topics optimized to enable the infosec administrator to acquire the body of technical knowledge and communication skills needed to converse effectively with personnel in all elements of their organization. Proficient infosec administrators can network well on the eight layer of the ISO model (political) and the material contained in this track will help them to bridge the gap that often exists between managers and system administrators. Key components of the track include: understanding the threats and risks to information and information resources, identifying best practices that can be used to protect them, and learning to diversify our protection strategy.

We begin with an overview of general security concepts that are described in layman's terms. Typical topics include information assurance pillars and enablers, risk (threats and vulnerabilities), trust, principles and strategies, security as a process, auditing, and physical security. We then move to the basics of networking as we examine the Internet Protocol, routing, Domain Name Service, and network devices along with a discussion of attacks and countermeasures. After covering the basics of cryptography, we move to policy as a tool for infosec administrators to effect change in their organizations. We move to exploring Defense in Depth in a real world setting and learn that much of security is involved with making informed tradeoffs - staying in business means more than just strong passwords. We round out the track with a full day of 'hands on' exercises in which we explore security from start to finish and apply the material covered in the first five days.

Successful completion of this track will provide attendees with not only the knowledge of what needs to be done, but also why it is important as well as suggestions for how to advise (and convince) the boss (along with other key personnel). This track is targeted for Corporate and Government infosec administrators and managers (both line and program) who have responsibilities that include any aspect of Information Assurance. System administrators can also gain valuable insights as we discuss issues from more that just a "technical" perspective.

Note: This track is one of SANS' least technical. It is perfect if you are starting out, but if you have experience in the IT field, please consider our more advanced offerings.
