Full Description:
This course delivers a complete review of how security policy and security management work together to secure an enterprise in an efficient and cost effective manner. The course begins with a discussion of risk and risk analysis. This discussion delves into such topics as quantifying the cost of protecting against threats and formulas for determining the cost/benefit factors with respect to selection of security controls. Students are then led through a virtual tour of building an enterprise network starting from the OSI networking model through implementation of perimeter protection and intrusion detection. Each topic combines discussions of technical and non-technical controls, and the policies that might justify implementation of security controls. Hands-on labs will reinforce discussions and build upon each other such that, by the end of the class, students will have implemented working policies and security procedures in such areas as assessment, log monitoring and IDS operations. The techniques illustrated in this course will be used to defend against instructor-initiated attacks, while the same tools and techniques will be used to track and identify the source of the attacks. The class ends with a discussion of emergency response techniques, forensic investigation techniques, and legal implications of investigating computer crimes in an enterprise.
