Network deployments that meet today's needs present challenges on many levels. One frequently misunderstood aspect of networking is security. This course is designed to instruct students on various facets of network security and to introduce students to the tools that are available to secure and monitor TCP/IP based networks. Students will have an opportunity to see both commercial and freeware security tools in action and learn about the technology behind each tool.

Some of the technologies that are discussed include firewalls, authentication, encryption, intrusion detection, and malicious code control. Also, students will learn about OS hardening fundamentals, and security assessment tools and techniques. Each technology discussion will include demonstrations of popular products and freeware tools in which the instructor will attempt to attack network devices protected by these products.
