Full Description:
Overview

Learn the second layer to securing AIX systems in an enterprise security environment. Learn about the first layer in:

AIX Security I: Host-based Mechanisms (Q1341)
Focus on network based security mechanisms included with the basic AIX installation and bonus package CD-ROMs. The goal of many system and application administrators is uniform access to systems and applications without the end user being aware of where the application is running. Learn to extend host-based mechanisms over the network so that user access to application and system resources is independent of the host supporting the user, wherever possible and permitted. Through lab exercises, learn the inherent weaknesses of a networked environment so that network related risks to information systems security can be determined.

The course has a high technical content and may not be suitable for individuals who are not technically involved with network protocols or applications. The theme of the topics concerns the increased complexity of managing system resources over a network versus host based mechanisms (taught in Q1341). These include user administration, file access, and policy auditing and security alerts.

Skills taught

Identify risks inherent in network communications
Implement user administration using AIX Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) filesets
Use iptrace and tcpdump to monitor Internet Protocol (IP) packets arriving at and departing from a host
Implement Access Control Lists (ACL) in a Network File System (NFS) environment
Describe differences between Authentication File System (AFS), Distributed File System (DFS), and NFS
Enhance security audit configurations to include network events

Audience

System, application, and network administrators responsible for information system security.
